Performance Leads to Promotions? Not Necessarily, Minorities Say
Research shows white workers believe in merit advancement more than Hispanics and blacks do.

perceptions of merit-based promotions may be shaped by your ethnicity. White
people are more likely to believe that job
performance will lead to promotions whereas Hispanics and blacks are somewhat less sure. According to a survey by Noavations Inc., a Boston training
consultancy, nearly 63 percent of white employees adhere to the belief that
performance is the most critical factor in career advancement, compared with
about 57 percent of Hispanics and 58 percent of blacks. Instead, the minority
workers are more likely than whites to cite other reasons, such as “who you
know” and seniority.
