Performance Leads to Promotions? Not Necessarily, Minorities Say

Research shows white workers believe in merit advancement more than Hispanics and blacks do.

Your perceptions of merit-based promotions may be shaped by your ethnicity. White people are more likely to believe that job performance will lead to promotions whereas Hispanics and blacks are somewhat less sure. According to a survey by Noavations Inc., a Boston training consultancy, nearly 63 percent of white employees adhere to the belief that performance is the most critical factor in career advancement, compared with about 57 percent of Hispanics and 58 percent of blacks. Instead, the minority workers are more likely than whites to cite other reasons, such as “who you know” and seniority.
