Study: Unhappy Workers Abound in U.S.

Disenchantment permeates the workplace, fueled by shoddy performance review processes and a lack of career development.

Flirting With Turnover: According to the Conference Board, “Americans are growing increasingly unhappy with their jobs.” Job satisfaction has been steadily declining, dropping from 61 percent of people who were happy with their positions in the mid-1980s to less than 50 percent now. Workers younger than 25 tend to be the least satisfied, although disenchantment has spread “among all workers, regardless of age, income or even residence.” Many companies are failing in key areas, including “performance review processes, workload, work/life balance, communication channels and potential for future growth.” About 20 percent of these disgruntled workers expect to occupy different jobs a year from now.
