Retirements? No Problem, Say Companies

Less than one-quarter of surveyed companies cite retirements as a key talent management challenge.

What Workforce Crunch? Despite the angst being generated about retiring baby boomers and a resulting workforce crunch, many companies apparently aren’t too concerned. A survey released this week by Bersin & Associates found that only 23 percent of respondents viewed “pending retirement of key workers” as a challenge to their talent development. More worrisome to the 700 surveyed companies is how to develop strategies to fill “gaps in the leadership pipeline,” cited as a chief concern by 51 percent of companies. Nor is talent management the sole province of human resources. Nearly 70 percent of companies place the responsibility with groups other than HR, including CEOs, top management and line-of-business executives.
