Employees Who Browse Online Fear Getting Fired


Survey finds that nearly half are aware violating corporate policies could lead to dismissal.

Online and on Alert: Employees rightfully fear the repercussions of browsing pornographic or other inappropriate material at work, according to Websense, a San Diego company that makes software that blocks employees from surfing the Web at work and therefore has a vested interest in such matters. About 46 percent believe they could lose their jobs for viewing adult content, while another 30 percent believe they’d be shown the door if they infected company computers with malicious spyware or viruses, even inadvertently. Other interesting findings: If faced with a choice between giving up their morning coffee and giving up the ability to surf the Web for personal use at work, 50 percent would forgo their morning Joe. Another 12 percent claim to have visited pornography Web sites “either by accident or on purpose, while one in four fess up to listening to non-work-related streaming video or audio at least once a week.
