England Wants to Hold Employers Accountable for Checking Immigrants

Companies found negligent might have to pay the cost of deporting illegal workers.

Papers, Please: In an attempt to crack down on illegal immigration, the British government is proposing laws that would make employers responsible for checking the passport or birth certificates of newly hired employees. To avoid discrimination, companies would have to require all new workers—be they immigrants or U.K. natives—to furnish documentation proving they are legal residents. According to The Guardian newspaper, employers also could be on the hook for paying all deportation expenses should they fail to carry out the proper checks of immigrant workers, with costs approaching $20,000 per person.
