Spring Fever, Summer Absences
Survey suggests 30 percent of employees will call in sick to take advantage of nice weather.
Sick and Tired: Summer is approaching, meaning organizations should brace to
experience “seasonal absence syndrome,” according to findings by the Workforce
Institute. In its “Summer Absenteeism” survey, conducted by Harris Interactive
and sponsored by Chelmsford, Massachusetts-based HR vendor Kronos Inc., 1,077
working adults were polled. Nearly 40 percent of respondents concede they called
in sick to enjoy the weather in 2006, with projections that at least 30 percent
of employees will malinger at least once this year. The report’s authors claim
the results fuel “the issue of employers balancing the needs of employees and
the business.”
