Retiring to Work: To afford their retirement, an estimated one-third of baby boomers and other workers “return to some level of employment,” according to researchers. In a paper titled “Is Retirement Being Remade?” researchers Sewin Chan and Ann Huff Stevens say more workers are opting for “gradual retirement” by reducing their hours over time, while a handful of people “reverse” their retirement to return to the labor force. On average, partially retired people are working about 40 weeks a year, for an average of 16 hours a week, and may hold the jobs as long as five years. Chan and Huff made their presentation during a recent conference at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School.
