Looming Talent War: “For too long, government intervention has been seen as the
solution … but jobs that provide meaningful employment can only come from real
private-sector growth.” Such a statement may not seem provocative until one
learns that the subject is rapid employment growth in the Middle East. Writing
in the Daily Star Egypt newspaper, Mohammed Abdul Latif Jameel and Robert Davies
cite estimates from the World Bank and United Nations that as many as 80 million
new jobs could be created as soon as 2010. Rather than consolidating power over
their economies, governments instead should “refocus education to deliver skills
employers need,” thus enabling the private sector to serve as the “motor for
development.” In their editorial, Jameel and Davies write that “masses of young
jobless Arabs not only represent a tragic waste of human potential—they also
threaten regional harmony and security.”
