Companies Still Prefer Employee Referrals

Companies are using social networking sites and other online tools, but input from trusted workers is highly valued during candidate searches.

Employees Know Best: The Society for Human Resource Management says companies are utilizing social networking sites, browsing membership directories and mining industry-specific blogs in search of qualified candidates. Yet employee referrals remain the best source for obtaining quality candidates, according to a study of 450 HR leaders, followed by major job boards and internal job postings. The SHRM research was intended to find out the differences in recruiting between companies with a “.jobs” domain name and those that don’t have the special Internet designation, which is sponsored by SHRM and was unveiled in 2005. The .jobs domain is intended to steer applicants directly to available jobs, which ostensibly improves recruiting outcomes.
