Visual learning: Executives would learn more about effective leadership by
watching movies rather than reading management books. That’s the advice of four
Italian management consultants who are pushing their own unique management tome,
titled Cinema for Managers. The book by Francesco Bogliari, Sergio Di Giorgi,
Marco Lombardi and Piero Trupia lists 50 movies that the authors say showcase
problem solving, building relationships, handling crises and embracing
diversity. Among the films are Westerns by John Wayne that illustrate leadership
and commitment to mission, Sidney Lumet’s 1974 film Murder on the Orient
Express, which is emblematic of solid teamwork, and The Terminal starring Tom
Hanks, which teaches lessons about entrepreneurship and overcoming obstacles.
