Black Gold, Golden Opportunities
Petroleum engineers are finding themselves in greater demand than ever.
By Garry Kranz
Oil Boom: Advocates of “green” business practices can’t be pleased about this
news, but according to professors at Texas Tech University, a booming oil and
gas industry is triggering demand for petroleum engineers
. Texas Tech says it plans to launch a fundraising campaign “to address the global
and national workforce issues” surrounding the industry. The Lubbock,
Texas-based university says graduates coming out of the nation’s limited number
of petroleum engineering programs potentially could net salaries of $100,000 or
higher, a result of talent shortages coupled with spiraling demand. From a low
of 1,800 students nationwide in 1991, undergraduate enrollment approached 4,000
last year.
