Nurses Least Satisfied Health Care Workers
They want to be engaged and have advancement opportunities, as do other hospital employees.
By Garry Kranz
Easier Said Than Done: As if the national nursing shortage
weren’t enough of a concern, hospital administrators now confront this alarming
statistic: Registered nurses are the least satisfied of all hospital employees.
In fact, the level of job satisfaction of nurses is tied directly to nurse
vacancy rates at hospitals, according to a report by Press Ganey Associates
Inc., a South Bend, Indiana-based firm that helps hospitals improve the quality
of care. Hospitals are said to be failing in two key retention-related areas,
according to the report: building a “culture of engagement” with employees and
paying adequate attention to providing opportunities for promotion. The report
gathered feedback from more than 193,000 employees at about 370 U.S. hospitals.
