Sick but Working: More often than not, U.S. workers are showing up even while sick. According to a poll from ComPsych Corp., a Chicago provider of employee assistance services, 83 percent of the 1,000 employees surveyed tough it out and report for duty even when under the weather. One-quarter say they do it because to take time off is “risky” in the current economic climate. Almost the same proportion, 21 percent, do it to save sick days in case they have to care for sick children. But nearly 40 percent of dedicated workers say they are driven by heavy workloads to show up, despite how lousy they feel.
