Communication Is Key: Employee communication programs were all the rage in
2007, as companies aimed to increase participation in their benefit programs, a
recent Watson Wyatt Worldwide report shows.
Watson Wyatt’s 2007/2008 Communication ROI study found that the number of
employers who use communication tools to increase enrollment in benefits has
more than doubled since 2004. The outreaches including such means as printed
materials, mailings and meetings. Fifty-three percent of companies said they did
this in 2007, up from 25 percent in 2003.
Total reward statements are an increasingly popular item. The number of
employers offering these personalized explanations to employees is up 13 percent
over the past four years.
Companies are also making sure that their messages are on target, according
to the report. The number of employers that regularly measure employee behavior
changes to verify that their communication initiatives are working has increased
by 24 percent over the past four years. Today, 53 percent of employers are using
corporate communication scorecards to measure effectiveness in such areas as
employee retention.
