Face Time: Even though employers remain wary of social networking sites,
users looking for jobs are OK with companies scanning their profiles when
recruiting. At least that’s true in Canada, where a national study indicates
that 51 percent of Facebook users have no problem with their current employers
viewing their profiles. Researchers say that’s because workers are growing more
savvy and aware of the potential impact of social networks in job hunting.
Moreover, two in five job-seeking Canadians would consider allowing
prospective employers to log on to personal profiles, as an addendum to their
résumés. That’s according to Zinc Research and Dufferin Research, which
partnered in the online poll of 1,200 Canadians—51 percent of whom are said to
be Facebook members.
The Canadian findings are in stark contrast to attitudes in countries such as
Ireland, where a recent study revealed that nearly two-thirds of Irish workers
with employer-provided Internet access are prohibited from viewing social
networking and other consumer-oriented Web sites—mostly out of fear they will
squander productive time.
