Universal Language: Workers for the Bulgarian government are getting a crash course in learning to speak English fluently. According to the Sofia News Agency, the initiative targets 15,000 state workers with the goal of preparing them to work more effectively with other institutions throughout Europe. Employees who complete the eight-month-long course, which includes passing a final exam, earn a certificate and a “language passport, known as Europass.” The classes are being paid for by the European Social Fund.

Also getting under way is a project by Bulgaria’s Ministry of Labor to promote an agenda for lifelong learning. The project is being prepared and implemented within the framework of the European Union’s “Education and Training 2010” program. According to a report from Bulgaria’s Web Media Group, the lifelong learning initiative is designed to raise Bulgarian citizens’ “social conviction in the meaning of education and training.”
