New Manufacturing: As U.S. automakers shutter factories and lay off workers,
Honda Motor Co. is relocating some manufacturing plants stateside. Honda CEO
Takeo Fukui said last week that Honda plans to shift production of its Pilot
sport utility vehicle and Ridgeline pickup from a plant in Ontario, Canada, to
one in Lincoln, Alabama, the Associated Press reports. In turn, that will enable
Honda to accelerate the production of Civic sedans in Canada. Although making
the change does not create new jobs, Honda is planning to boost its workforce by
2,000 people when it opens a pair of new manufacturing plants this summer in
Indiana, the AP reports. The move signals a shift in consumers’ attitudes away
from large, gas-guzzling luxury vehicles to more fuel-efficient models, Fukui
told the AP.
