No Section for Smoking: Dell is banning smoking at its U.S. campuses, the Round Rock, Texas-based computer maker said last week. Beginning January 1, 2009, Dell employees will be prohibited from lighting up at work. Aside from Dell’s facilities, the ban extends to company parking lots and the cars they contain. The proscription also applies to visitors to Dell. According to the Austin American-Statesman newspaper, the company said it will provide free programs to help employees kick the smoking habit, including paying for up to three months of “tobacco-cessation prescriptions.” Citing a confidential company memo, the newspaper says Dell employees who complete company-sponsored programs will have their medical premiums reduced. Dell becomes the latest major company to ban smoking. Some companies have struggled with enforcing such policies.
