Not Strangers Anymore: Japan is facing an interesting dilemma. The number of foreign students who graduated from Japanese colleges and subsequently found jobs in Japan topped 10,000 for the first time in 2007, according to the Associated Press. Citing Japanese immigration officials, the report notes that the number of foreign-born graduates entering the workforce immediately after college rose 24 percent since 2006. Expanded employment opportunities, particularly jobs in information technology and related sectors, are fueling most of the increase. Japan’s labor officials reportedly are developing plans that enable the roughly 120,000 foreign students currently in Japan to secure jobs upon graduation. Of the 10,262 non-Japanese graduates to enter this year’s job market, most are from other countries in Asia, with China leading the charge, followed by South Korea, Taiwan, Bangladesh and Vietnam, the report says.
