Nearly half of hiring directors plan to add IT staff amid economic uncertainties

Supply and Demand: The information technology sector is likely to avoid a repeat
of the bloodletting that occurred during a downturn in 2001-02. British
recruiting company the ReThink Group says demand for IT skills “is likely to
remain reasonably buoyant” during the next year, especially for permanent staff.
That is the product of a dwindling supply of talent coupled with increased
business demands. Also, salaries for on-staff IT professionals are on the rise,
with 55 percent of IT directors saying they expect to pay more for top talent
during the next 12 months. ReThink Group says it polled 45 IT directors in a
cross section of industries. Rising salaries will prompt nearly 70 percent to
increase, or at least maintain, their reliance on independent contractors.
Recruiting high-caliber candidates is the top worry for nearly three-quarters of
IT hiring managers, and 81 percent fret about retaining key contributors.
