Industrious in Israel: The prevailing threat of terrorism has not dampened
the work ethic of the Israelis. The government’s Central Bureau of Statistics
says civilian unemployment fell across Israel to 5.9 percent in the second
quarter of 2008, according to Haaretz.com, the online edition of Haaretz
Newspaper. That is the lowest it has been in nearly 25 years. About 9,000 people
secured work during the quarter, shaving Israel’s jobless rate from 6.1 percent.
That left about 174,300 people without jobs. The newspaper says 5.9 percent of
working men remained unemployed, slightly lower than women (6.2 percent).
Central Israel boasts the highest proportion of workers at nearly 63 percent. In
Tel Aviv, nearly 61 percent of adults have jobs.
In another report, UPI reports that Israel’s Ministry of Finance is
considering proposals to increase the number of Israeli citizens in the
construction workforce and limit the number of Palestinian workers. The report
says the move could threaten the livelihood of Palestinian construction workers
employed in Israel, which number about 15,000.
