Distance Working: Even though gas prices have dropped lately, they still are much higher than in recent times. That is prompting more organizations to offer telecommuting as an employee benefit, according to a survey. Human resources association WorldatWork, based in Washington, D.C., says 42 percent of companies in the U.S. offer some form of telework arrangement, up from 30 percent a year ago. About one in four Canadian employers do so, topping the 25 percent previously. Among other findings: Nearly 40 percent of U.S. and Canadian firms paid retention bonuses, a jump from 27 percent a year earlier, while use of signing bonuses is also surging (70 percent in the U.S. and 51 percent in Canada). About 2,700 organizations participated in the survey.
