Bailing Out Employees: Many employees are hoping their companies will help them
deal with the Wall Street fallout. Work/life consulting firm Workplace Options,
based in Raleigh, North Carolina, says in a survey that half of American workers
are facing undue stress about the financial markets, thus cutting into their job
productivity. More than one-third of respondents note making alterations to
their retirement plans, and nearly one-quarter have “changed their mind about
buying a new home.” The roiling financial situation is causing workers to turn
to their employers for assistance, with nearly 40 percent saying the provision
of company-sponsored “financial consultation” is very important, and 57 percent
vowing to use the services if offered. However, the research is vague on how
many companies are implementing such offerings.
