Unhappy Holidays: An economic staple—abundant hourly jobs during the
holidays—may be in jeopardy, according to a recent report. Online job board
SnagAJob.com says in a survey that hiring managers plan to add roughly four
seasonal employees in 2008, which it says is 33 percent fewer than the 5.6
people brought aboard during last year’s holiday season. Nearly 60 percent say
they don’t plan on hiring additional staff for the holidays, up more than 8
percent. Compounding things is the fact that nearly 40 percent of companies
expect to be flooded with more job applications than a year ago, according to
the SnagAJob.com/Ipsos Public Affairs survey of 1,000 American hiring managers.
October is the month that most of those companies (39 percent) will step up
their search for hourly workers.
