Recession May Drive Poles Home From Britain

Polish Expats: Worried about recession, about one-third of Polish expatriates in Great Britain could return home in search of more economic stability, a newspaper reports. The looming exodus poses a threat to the country’s economy, which according to The London Daily Telegraph will see the loss of about 400,000 Polish workers—a labor force that generates £1.9 billion ($3 billion) a year to the British Treasury. Fears abound that Polish construction workers could be lost, thus stymieing Britain’s building boom.

Officials with the Warsaw government reportedly cite the rise in value of the Polish zloty against the British pound as a major reason, especially since Poland has to date largely escaped the global credit crisis that has engulfed much of continental Europe.
