Reading, Writing and Recruiting:Saudi Arabia is cracking down on illiterate
workers coming from abroad. According to Arab News and other news outlets, the
kingdom’s government has instructed its foreign missions to ban people who can’t
read or write from applying for jobs in the Gulf nation. In fact, they must make
literacy a recruitment requirement before issuing a job visa. The decision stems
from a government study on crimes committed by expatriate workers. It reportedly
shows uneducated workers top the list of criminals.
