Extended Deployments Could Hurt Work Prospects of Citizen Soldiers:
The Pentagon's decision to extend active-duty requirements for citizen soldiers
in the National Guard and military reserves could take a toll on both civilian
employers and employees. Employers may shy away from hiring reservists or
National Guard members.
House Passes Minimum Wage Bill: Momentum for increasing the minimum
wage is likely to slow in the Senate, where Democrats have a 51-49 majority.
Under Senate rules, it takes 60 votes to end debate and move to final passage
of legislation.
Korn/Ferry Acquires Major Executive Coaching Firm:
The just-announced deal comes on the heels
of Korn/Ferry's August purchase of Lominger Ltd. and allows the company
to extend its reach beyond its traditional executive search capabilities.
Congress Goes After Retirement Plan Fees:
Joined by the Labor Department, Rep. George
Miller will spearhead a move toward broader disclosure.
Employee Ratings of Senior Management Dip:
Chasms in communication strategies, which corporations have let widen since
the terrorist attacks of 2001, contribute to the drop.
Report Finds CEO Succession Is Directors' Top Concern:
Roughly half of the corporate boards from public, private and nonprofit
companies say they are "less than effective" at CEO succession, and only
a similar percentage have a succession plan in place, according to a new
survey.
Feature Rep. George Miller, D-California, became chairman of the just-renamed House Education and Labor Committee this month, when Democrats took control of Congress. Miller played a prominent role in making an increase in the minimum wage a congressional priority.
