France is in the vanguard of addressing the issue of bullying in the workplace, but the European Union supports the movement and other national regimes are close behind. As more companies go global, human resources and other executives should at least become aware of the phenomenon, and France’s particular take on what constitutes bullying. If you have employees in that nation, it will become hard to avoid.
Commentary: For every headline-grabbing act of violence in the workplace, hundreds more—less dramatic in scale—go unreported each year. Although employers are not responsible for unknowable risk, victims or their families can hold employers accountable for those that they should have anticipated. Here are some preventive actions that companies can take to address the unpredictable results of human emotion and interaction.
Workers were less confident in the strength of the economy and job availability, but were more optimistic about their job security.
Employers are advised that stereotypes as to how men or women should look or act create a basis for challenging adverse employment decisions. It is recommended that employers include in routine harassment and other training for managers the issue of potential liability and the increase of litigation over this issue.
If candidate demonstrates a track record of performance before joining the organization, and demonstrates continued performance, continued screening is unnecessary.
Several years ago, pharmacies embraced retail clinics over work-site clinics with the thinking that as more employers used high-deductible health plans, more employees would be interested in low-cost alternatives for basic health care, like flu shots. That’s beginning to change.
The best way to drive employee engagement is for managers to accentuate the positive in employee performance. The second best engagement approach is to focus performance discussions on employee weaknesses. Worst choice: Give no feedback at all.
The legislation would prohibit insurers or employers from conducting video surveillance unless they have ‘a reasonable basis to suspect that the employee has committed fraud or made a material misstatement concerning the claim.’
