Well-Known Trade Magazine 'Training' to Shutter Next Month

The publication is widely recognized in the HR industry, particularly for its popular and well-respected list of best companies for training, the Training Top 125. Winners for the 2010 list were named earlier this month and include IBM, Ritz-Carlton, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers and EMC.

Nielsen Business Media told employees Tuesday, February 16, that it is shutting down Training magazine and its companion Web site, trainingmag.com, according to a Nielsen Co. spokesperson.

The publication is widely recognized in the HR industry, particularly for its popular and well-respected list of best companies for training, the Training Top 125. Winners for the 2010 list were named earlier this month, according to the Training Web site, and include IBM, Ritz-Carlton, Ernst & Young, PricewaterhouseCoopers and EMC.

The companies were honored at an awards gala at the San Diego Convention Center on February 1, according to Training’s Web site.

The March issue will be the publication’s last. The move includes the elimination of 11 positions, the spokesperson said. Editor in chief Lorri Freifeld had no comment on the publication’s pending closure.

“Things, themes and publications evolve, as our field shifted from training to a broader focus on learning,” said workforce learning consultant Elliott Masie, of training industry firm the Masie Center in a newsletter regarding the publication’s closure. “But, it is also important to remember and honor the people that contributed to the development of our field. Jim Secord and Phil Jones were two colleagues that grew the publication and helped to champion the industry. I have fond memories of them, their teams and the dialogues that were triggered by their publications.”

Nielsen Co. is exiting the trade publishing business; in addition to closing some publications, it is selling others. The company recently sold Billboard and The Hollywood Reporter to e5 Global Media.

Additionally, Nielsen was able to sell Commercial Property Executive and Multi-Housing News after shutting them down in the fall. Yardi Systems, a provider of property management software, acquired the titles late last year.

How Do We Build a World-Class Recruiting Department?

I need to establish a strategic plan on how we can become a world-class staffing/recruiting department. Unfortunately, all the historical data from previous recruiting managers got tossed. Do you have any simple tips on how to begin this ambitious plan?
