Two garbage workers in British Columbia say they were fired because they complained publicly about a surveillance camera being installed in their truck.

Last week, OK Environmental Waste Systems employees Andrew Shepherd and Shane Collins filed a complaint with the province´s information and privacy commissioner, and Shepherd spoke to CBC News about his concerns with the cameras.

On Feb. 20 the workers were fired, according to a CBC News report.

The drivers were not in a union, and, as employees, they had an obligation to OK Environmental, employment lawyer Veronica Ukrainetz told CBC.

"The employee has to be conscious whether what they are doing could damage the employer´s business or reputation," she said.

Cameras in collection trucks are not uncommon, and workers in many industries are monitored.

OK Environmental Waste Systems did not respond to CBC´s requests for a comment on the situation.
