Shoring Up Workers’ Skills

Not Bad for Government Work: Leaders in Great Britain have signed a “skills pledge” to boost the qualifications of government workers. The initiative is targeted toward improving the credentials and capabilities of about 475,000 people across 19 government departments. All eligible employees would receive training in basic skills, plus have the opportunity to earn qualifications leading to higher pay grades, according to Britain’s Government Skills sector.

A skills survey is being conducted to assess skill levels and map out learning strategies, officials said. A government report late last year warned that serious damage to the British economy would result “unless significant progress was made by 2010” to enhance workers’ skills.
