Brutes at Work: Bullies Threaten U.S. Workplaces

Up to half of all workers experience negative acts at least once a year.

Brutes at Work: American workers are bullied 50 percent more often than employees in Scandinavia, but most aren’t even aware it’s happening, according to new research set to appear in the Journal of Management Studies. Only 9 percent of employees even realize that the boorish behavior to which they are subjected constitutes bullying, suggesting it has become “ingrained in the culture” of U.S. workplaces. It’s not clear why American work sites are compared with those in Scandinavia, although the soon-to-be-released report’s author, Dr. Pamela Lutgen-Sandvik, speculates in an earlier report that 35 percent to 50 percent of U.S. workers “experience one negative act at least weekly” during any six- to 12-month period.
