Steven Burd is chairman, president and chief executive officer of Safeway Inc., one of the largest food and drug retailers, operating 1,767 stores in the United States and Canada. Mr. Burd has been a leading voice for market-based health care reforms at the state and national levels including support for California Governor Schwarzenegger’s Health Care Summit. Safeway has initiated innovative health care solutions for its non-union workers with results that include reducing total health care costs by 30% over two years versus the prior increasing trend. Safeway has passed the majority of these savings directly to participating employees.
