Discussion
Advice on Relocation

Posted in the General Forum:

A reader writes: "We hired an employee and offered to pay for her relocation costs. Our contracted moving company picked up her belongings and moved them, and we paid for those costs. Unfortunately, while she was driving out here to start work, she got into a terrible car accident and was disabled. The moving company put her items into storage for her while she was recovering. She withdrew her acceptance of the position as she can no longer physically work in this position and has since moved back home to pursue other opportunities. She now is requesting to get her belongings out of storage and shipped back to her home (on the other side of the country). I think we should pick up the tab on these items due to the situation; however, my director is unsure if the full cost should be paid entirely by us. Do you think the individual should be responsible for any of these costs? What advice do you have?"

Why Flex Work Makes Sense

The whole notion of flexible work arrangements—letting employees work where they want and how they want—is a smart idea that is finally starting to take hold. We’ve written about it several times here at Workforce Management, and earlier this year we gave our 2007 Optimas Award  for Innovation to Best Buy for a program developed with CultureRx that drives better business results by getting rid of the traditional rules of work and letting employees decide how they can best get their job done
