Workforce News of the Week:
China, U.K. Cited as Rising Forces in Global Talent: China and the
United Kingdom are about as politically and culturally different as two
countries can get, but from a workforce management perspective, they have
something in common.
Critics Give Grim Prognosis for Consumer-Driven Health Plans: Consumer-driven
health care is either just getting started or is already on its way out.
Both perspectives were presented recently at the National Consumer Driven
Healthcare Summit in Washington, ruffling more than a few feathers.

Benefits Although most consumer-driven health plans are designed to emphasize wellness and prevention to reduce future health care costs, experts say it is too early to tell whether plan members are using those kinds of services more frequently than members of traditional health plans.

Discussion
A reader writes: "When applying for an HR
job, it's common to see 'four-year degree required.' Not so many years ago,
HR people decided that such a requirement was an 'artificial barrier to
employment' unless the degree, or a certification of some kind, was a bona
fide job requirement. But, suddenly, it's back in vogue again. My job searches
are further thwarted by the electronic job boards that automatically screen
me out when I don't meet the requirement. Excuse my cynicism, but does stepping
out of school after four years really measure up to 15 years of hands-on
in a variety of environments? How do I get around this? (Please don't suggest
I return to school for a degree.)"
Blogs: The Business of Management I've always been
skeptical of the advice that comes from so many consultants and 'experts,'
those people who want to tell you how to fix a problem or better run your
business, despite the fact that they have never really done it themselves. Workforce Washington Contributing blogger The HR Capitalist Tale of Two Performers: The Warrior and the Continuous Learner (and why Motivational Fit Rules) I'm an NBA fan, so it's no surprise that I read Henry Abbott over at True Hoop, a blog that was recently acquired by ESPN.
