Discussion
Education vs. Experience

A reader writes: "When applying for an HR job, it's common to see 'four-year degree required.' Not so many years ago, HR people decided that such a requirement was an 'artificial barrier to employment' unless the degree, or a certification of some kind, was a bona fide job requirement. But, suddenly, it's back in vogue again. My job searches are further thwarted by the electronic job boards that automatically screen me out when I don't meet the requirement. Excuse my cynicism, but does stepping out of school after four years really measure up to 15 years of hands-on in a variety of environments? How do I get around this? (Please don't suggest I return to school for a degree.)"
