WORK VIEWS | More
Opinions, commentary and analysis on workforce management.

COMMENTARY:
Merit Pay, Differentiation and the Tragedy of the Commons
Merit pay can’t succeed when the short-term interests of individuals (such as managers protecting the interests of their direct reports) are at odds with the long-term interests of the group (such as an organization striving for real performance differentiation). But what if those managers were held accountable for their merit-pay choices?

Forced Use of PTO
- posted in the General Forum
A member writes: "I’m a staff RN in a large med center. We used to be able to go home when work was slow, with or without using our PTO. Recently, we are being ‘forced’ to go home ‘low-census’ and there is no longer option; we MUST use up vacation time. No one can answer the question why/how this benefits the med center? Is the ‘bank’ of accrued time somehow costing the med center money? We just want to know the nuts/bolts as to why. This is definitely having an impact on morale."
