Mandatory Paid Sick Leave Poised for First Test: California will
lead the rest of the country into new employment benefits territory in February
when a San Francisco ordinance mandating paid sick leave goes into effect.
Senate Minimum Wage Action Includes Exec Pay Salvo: The Senate Finance
Committee includes a provision in minimum wage legislation that would limit
to $1 million annually the amount of executive pay that a company can deduct
from its taxes.
DOL Review May Be Harbinger of FMLA Expansion:
A federal review of the country's primary employee
time-off law could be a prelude to expanding leave policy or curbing it.
Last month the DOL officially solicited public comment on the Family and
Medical Leave Act.
Employers Shorten 401(k) Waiting Periods:
More U.S. employers are shortening the time
that new employees must wait before they are eligible to participate in
401(k) plans, according to a new survey.
Smoke-Free Marriott Moves to Help Workers Kick Habit:
In October, Marriott International banned smoking in its guest rooms and
work areas. But the global hotel chain took a step beyond most other companies
by instituting a program to help employees drop their nicotine habit.
Appeals Court Rejects Maryland Health Care Mandate:
Affirming a lower court ruling, a federal appeals court has ruled that federal
law pre-empts a Maryland statute requiring large employers to spend a specific
amount of money on health insurance or face financial penalties.
Supreme Court Won't Take IBM Cash-Balance Case:
The U.S. Supreme Court declines to review a federal appeals court ruling
that IBM's cash-balance pension plan does not discriminate against older
employees.
Feature In December, Intel chairman Craig Barrett unveiled the formation of Dossia, an employer-sponsored group that would create a system of personal, portable electronic health records for member companies' employees. Barrett recently spoke one on one with Workforce Management staff writer Jeremy Smerd.
